Broadlands Community Centre

“At 11.30 there are 18 shinny hockey players on the ice, all of them wearing helmets. The friendly zamboni driver invites me into his office and we chat about when we came to Canada (he by plane, I on a boat). He’s been doing this work for several decades, and he takes pride in his rink.”  – irinks.ca

Plans to double the capacity of a municipal recreation centre in an established residential neighbourhood led to intense public scrutiny. Public meetings drew overflow crowds. Exhaustive lists of possibilities and problems were assembled, revised and updated.

After listening carefully to local concerns, we planned methodically – to preserve the best of what existed, improve what needed improvement, and add new resources that would augment the centre’s role as a community hub for athletic and civic events.

The scope of our work included reconfiguration of the existing structure plus a substantial new addition to provide seasonal change rooms, lounges, meeting and activity rooms, handicapped access, as well as refurbishment of the pool, skating rink, and exterior landscaping.

Working within available funding, we designed an exciting new facility, then watched as it has become a hub for community life.
